TODAY'S TOPIC: First Preferred Mortgage Co., which is headquartered in Port Huron with offices in Southfield and Bingham Farms.

THE CAUSE: Mark and Hale Walker, founders of First Preferred,have supported numerous charitable efforts in St. Clair County, including youth sports leagues, scholarship programs, education endowments and played a leadership role in a recent fund-raiser to renovate the Blue Water YMCA, which is on track to raise approximately $16 million. They also formulated the idea and led the inception of two education endowment funds: Friends of St. Mary's School and Supporters of East China Schools. The endowments total more than $200,000. The Walkers and First Preferred are working to support completion of a new Little League complex in St. Clair.

BACKGROUND: With their roots firmly planted in St. Clair County for more than 40 years, Mark and Hale Walker understand the importance of giving back to the people in their community and the surrounding area. The brothers say that it is their responsibility to give back and, in turn, encourage their employees to do their part in helping to improve the lives of others in their own communities.

RESULTS: Even in a community hit hard by the economic downturn, the Blue Water YMCA, where Mark Walker serves as president of the board, has seen an increase in membership after its recent multimillion-dollar renovation. A fund-raiser on Oct. 15 featuring Michigan State men's basketball coach Tom Izzo will raise money for scholarships so no child is turned away from YMCA programs. In addition, the Supporters of East China Schools and the Friends of St. Mary's School endowments are growing, with boards of directors that include school leaders, families and business leaders.
